Well, it's been one heck of a beginning to 2012. Between the great group at AEG giving me the opportunity to contribute to Thunderstone Advance, and Legend of the Five Rings. The folks at Catalyst, Brent specifically for the great art direction, and feedback. To the exciting new work with Fantasy Flight, this year has been amazing and it's only just got started!
The real news is even cooler..
I've been hired full time to work for a brand new game company. To help them not only produce their art, but to develop from the ground up the look and style for their products. Essentially, since we're small, I will be pinch hitting in the production and direction department for the other artists they have on board. I can't remember when I've been as excited, and terrified to contribute to a project. It's pretty obvious to me what the cause of my anxiety is. There's no safety net. No Art Director, to step in and help me with the choices you have to make as an artist. I'm the safety net, and sink or swim, at the end of the day it 'll be on me if the look doesn't connect with the idea the creators of the various I.P.'s had at the inception.
All that said, there's something to be said for abject terror. If you can toss a rope around it, and try to wrangle it, if not to get it under control, at least to get it underneath you. You can ride it to sharpen your abilities, and focus tightly on your goals. Everything else becomes background buzz when you are literally gazing at your worst fear.
I hate to send the impression that fear is the only emotion involved with this opportunity. Elation at having been selected, joy at the projects and the incentives, and excitement to do the best work I've ever done, and push myself to succeed beyond anything I have tried before. All of these and more are obviously knocking around in the bone box, but the elephant in the room is the Grim Reaper of total failure.
All I can really do, is work as hard as I can, and leave those things that I can't effect up to fate, the fans, and the gaming public. As always, I hope you all enjoy the work, and thank you for another great start to a year of making art.
